| Steven began DJing
at just 15 years of age.
Being too young to gain
entry into clubs at the
time, many of his early
influences would come
from bootlegged live mix-tapes,
mainly from U.S. house
DJs such as Todd Terry,
Masters At Work, Erick
Morillo & Roger Sanchez
who at the time, were
the kind of open-minded
& creative DJs who
brought with them something
different, utilised the
new technology available
to them & had an undoubtedly
unique style. Still drawn
towards the more technical
side of things today,
the passing years have
meant Stevens interests
& influences have
become more diverse with
both admiration for such
technically brilliant
DJs as Jeff Mills, James
Zabiela & many of
Hip-Hops pioneers, through
to the varied selections
of DJs such as Rae &
Christian, The Unabombers,
Greg Wilson, Mark Farina
& Laurent Garnier.
The result is a sound
thats never heading in
one direction & instead
branches out, taking on
board elements from all
of the above & embracing
everything from house,
disco & electro, to
hip-hop, soul & funk.
Following a year of playing
in local bars, Steven
came to people’s
attention after winning
a large scale DJ competition
held over the summer of
2000 by the Middlesbrough-based
night, Sugarshack. Aged
19, without a great deal
of public experience &
thrown in at the deep
end, he was soon gaining
it first hand in the main
room being placed on the
same bill as the likes
of Ministry Of Sound’s
Paul Jackson & Jazzy
M as well as Roger Sanchez,
Tim Deluxe, Erick Morillo
& Harry Choo Choo
Romero at Subliminal Sessions
events etc. The experience
serving him well, a year
later he went one better
beating the many 100’s
of entrants & winning
IDJ Magazines Readers
Mixes DJ competition &
proving it was no fluke,
was also featured as a
runner-up several months
later-with both articles
flatteringly comparing
him to such greats as
Roger Sanchez (“…a
mix Roger himself would
be proud of…smart
stateside grooves, spot-on
mixing & full of clever
acapellas…this lad
will go far...”
IDJ December 2001), Erick
Morillo & Masters
At Work (“…such
an obvious talent...rocks
like Morillo, throws in
more acapellas than Sanchez,
likes his vocals as big
as MAW, but costs a fraction
of the price of the lot
of them…”
IDJ April 2002).
Pushing a sound that
tastefully fuses both
familiar & underground
material, Steven has been
a regular face in his
local area for some time
now & with a renound
technical ability as well
as an ear for great music,
is soon becoming a favourite
with both fellow DJs &
clubbers alike. Recent
years have seen Steven
feature regularly throughout
the areas more popular
bars & prominant night
spots which have included
Beyond, Newcastle; The
Cornerhouse, Middlesbrough:
Sugarshack, Middlesbrough
(including 2 "Release
Yourself" parties
with Roger Sanchez &
their 10th Anniversary
with Paul Van Dyk) as
well events held by hard
dance night, Goodgreef.
After submitting a demo
CD & making an impression
on the Goodgreef promoters,
Steven found himself been
called up at an hours
notice to cover a DJ who
had fallen ill. Not one
to miss out on an oppertunity,
he hurried to Tall Trees,
Yarm where a successful
warm-up for Radio 1's
Judge Jules in the "Houseparty"
room for Goodgreef Vs
Judgement Sunday meant
he would be included in
several future line-ups
featuring the likes of
Eddie Halliwell, Ann Savage
& Lisa Lashes (to
name but a few) for
events held not only at
Tall Trees, but also The
Warehouse, Leeds &
The Foundation, Wakefield.
It wasnt' until shortly
after the airing of a
guest-mix recorded for
poular local station,
TFM96.60fm's "Friday
Night Kiss" radio
show that Steven began
playing for local agency
Dleuxe DJs & with
that came regular appearances
at Dusted at The Purple
Onion, Middlesbrough together
with other Deluxe-ralated
venues in the area such
as Bar 55, Newcastle &
Blue Lounge, Middlesbrough.
With the positive feed-back
recieved having already
played at Dusted on several
occasions since the change
of venue, as well as doing
his bit for the tsunami
appeal in headlining at
an overseas charity event
earlier this year which
featured a host of other
up & coming UK DJs,
it was only right to make
Steven the most recent
addition to the Dusted
team. With future dates
beginning to mount up,
with future gigs still
being confirmed in Plymouth,
Birmingham & Ibiza,
as well as a follow-up
to the Tsunami benefit
event in Spain, expect
to hear a lot more very
soon!
